Due to the demands of daily life I was unable to add a new song last week. Believe me I tried to find the time but all I was able to do was sneak a preview of this week's song on Twitter. Working two jobs, raising a son, writing and recording songs plus spending time family and friends, as I'm sure you can well relate, is a balancing act that does not always work in your favor with what you want to accomplish. Now that I got my excuse and whine out of the way let's get down to business. I present with great excitement my newest serving of skull candy a little ditty I call "(OMG) Mom, I'm an Alien" for your listening pleasure. A week old but still fresh serving of head food that is sure to satisfy even the most critical of taste bud's.
This song I wrote a while ago back in my singer/songwriter days. It is part of a library of songs I am rediscovering and updating. I first wrote out a basic blues rock beat to go with the original acoustic guitar line and then recorded both. Was fun to finally have a beat to go with the song but the funkiness of the main guitar line left me looking for something more from the beat. So I went into my untapped bag of drum sounds and started experimenting with the sounds of different styles while keeping the same blues-rock beat. I found several sounds I liked. From the electronic genre I chose a jungle and a reggae club sound plus I found a hip-hop sound that worked with the beat too. Each on their own sounded good, especially the jungle, but when I mixed them all together the sound and the beat took on a character all it's own.
So now I had the beat that was totally unique from anything else I had ever done and now the base guitar line, while still fun and funky, seemed a bit flat in comparison to the beat. So I went back to basics and tried playing different voicings for each of the chords on the base guitar line. I took a cue from the soul and funk players and used basic three note chord triads on the top three strings over the top of the base guitar line. This created a nice complimentary melody to the base guitar line plus with the weight of the beat made the song balance itself out. Still there was room for something more. So I grabbed my Gibson Les Paul and focus more on different chord positions and voicings to play over the base guitar line but to also compliment and support the melody guitar line. When I was done I had a monster of a sound when the three guitar line were combined plus a funk and feel all my own.
Now it was time to add the last of the meat and potatoes for my head food stew, the bass. I had never worked out a bass line for the song in my singer/songwriter days but have had a lot of experience in improvising bass lines in jam sessions over the years. So I plugged in the bass, loaded the song and played what came to mind. By the third take I had written and recorded the bass line that was the last ingredient I needed for the stew. I was then onto the vocals.
I have been practicing the song semi-regularly for the past few years which meant I knew the lyrics well and did not have to refer to a lyrics sheet while singing as I've done on my more recent songs. Three takes was the magic number once again. Now it was time to add a bit of salt and pepper to the stew. Being a song writing guitarist I had to add a solo. This took longer than anything else. Why you may ask? Finding the right solo took a few hours but the sound to use took even longer. I wanted a tone that complimented the sound of the song but also reflected the title of the song as well. I combined tons of amp and effects and found that in the end that going back to basics was the key. Found a basic amp sound and then added a classic distortion effect that when combined made their own voice.
So that is the tale of how my latest skull candy came to be. Hope you enjoy the song and please tweet, share and send it to your friends and family. I thank you for the listen and don't forget to bookmark this page or subscribe to my feed because more songs are on the way. Stay tuned!

(OMG) Mom, I'm an Alien
When I was so much younger
Younger than today
The kids looked to me and say
Why's your skin turn blue that way
I flew home that day
Dropped to my knees and prayed
Why was I made so differently this way
Got fingers long like drum sticks
An x-ray vision eye
Though there's not much difference
Between you and I
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
I'm faster than any track star
Smarter than anyone alive
And all this before
I even hit the age of five
Some say I'm the way of the future
Others say burn him alive
Though either or
I just can't sympathize
I'm just another kid
Going to school
Even though I stand
Just around twelve foot two
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
When other kids hit puberty
I grew scales and wings
And a big bushy tail
For me to do my thing
I used to fly all day
Breathe fire every night
Til my parent found out
And turned out all the lights
The walls stick to my fingers
My feet stick to the floor
I'm all a fly could want
Even then some and more
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
Oh my god mom, I'm an alien
